And the risk of adverse effects remains real, from minor visual distortions to hallucinations. Those effects occur most often with LSD and other serotonergic drugs, including ayahuasca. In addition, many psychedelics have been linked to a poorly understood phenomenon called HPPD, which can lead to persistent distortions in perception—from seeing auras around light to “breathing” surfaces and afterimages—even years after initial use. It’s not clear how many people are affected by HPPD, but estimates vary from one to four percent of frequent users.
