Land Rover makes several body styles for the Defender, each with their own character and style. Two-door Defender 90 and four-door 110 are the most popular, but the new eight-passenger Defender 130 is an equally appealing option.
Unlike the original Defender, which used a body-on-frame design and rode on solid front and rear axles, the new generation uses a unibody construction and a fully independent suspension. That means a higher ride height, more ground clearance and superior ability to ford through deep water.
The Defender is also equipped with some of the latest off-roading equipment, including locking differentials and a height-adjustable air suspension that can be tuned to work in conjunction with a specific wade mode. It also has a suite of driver assistance features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning and lane-keeping assist.
It’s no surprise that the Defender is a top-rated vehicle in terms of fuel economy, with all but the base four-cylinder rated for 18 mpg city and 21 highway. The newest addition to the lineup, the long-wheelbase Defender 130, gets even better ratings at 17 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway, though that’s only possible with the six-cylinder.
